Grüner Veltliner 2022 — BERTA WINERY, Strekov, Slovakia

Slovakia doesn't often appear on the radar of UK wine buyers, and that's precisely the point. This Grüner Veltliner from brothers Lukáš and Matúš Berta comes from the Strekov appellation in southwestern Slovakia, a region quietly producing some of Central Europe's most exciting white wines, with volcanic and loess soils that give a character entirely its own.

Grüner Veltliner is most associated with Austria, but Strekov's terroir gives BERTA's version a distinctly Slovak personality. Pale green-gold in colour, the wine opens with delicate aromas of ripe peach, white flowers and subtle mineral notes. The palate is fresh and juicy, displaying the classic Grüner Veltliner profile of vibrant citrus and orchard fruit, complemented by a distinctive peppery spice. A gentle almond bitterness on the finish adds complexity and elegance, leaving a long, refreshing aftertaste.

Screwcap sealed, as all BERTA wines are, with up to five years of cellaring potential for those who can wait. Crisp acidity and excellent balance make this a versatile food wine. Serve at 9°C with freshwater fish, vegetable dishes, or anything fried and golden.
