World-class wines, rooted in Strekov.

The Name

Four generations of hands-on winemaking.

Berta is not a brand invented for a label, it is the family's own surname. The winery was founded in 2007 by Tibor Berta together with his wife Elena, and today their two sons, Lukáš and Matúš, work alongside them, making it a genuinely four-strong family operation rather than a business run in a family's name. All four hold formal viticultural qualifications, from winemaking school in Modra to agricultural studies in Nitra, so the name on the bottle stands for hands-on expertise across every generation involved, not just a founding figure.

The Land

A marsh-cooled microclimate on ancient black soil.

The vineyards sit in Strekov, in Slovakia's Južnoslovenská (South Slovak) wine region, at a modest 170–220 metres above sea level on slopes rising to 15%. The site benefits from an unusual microclimate: the nearby Paris Marsh, the largest cane marsh in Slovakia, drives cold air circulation that widens the gap between day and night temperatures, helping grapes retain acidity through the region's hot summers (up to 38°C) and cold winters (down to −15°C), on only around 350mm of rainfall a year. Underfoot lies "černozem", a nutrient-rich black soil formed from loess, with a fine humus layer and high pH, which the family credits with giving their wines both their acid backbone and their characteristic juiciness.

The Founder

"Quality wine is born in the vineyard"

Tibor Berta’s winemaking journey began with formal training in Modra and Lednice in Moravia, before taking him into the development of two of Slovakia’s distinctive grape varieties, Dunaj and DevínIn 2007. Tibor founded the family winery in Strekov, guided by a simple philosophy: “Quality wine is born in the vineyard.” What started on a small scale, producing around 2,000 bottles a year, has steadily grown into a winery producing approximately 13,000 bottles annually, while remaining firmly independent and family-run. Today, the whole family plays an active role. Elena oversees the day-to-day operation of the winery and plays a key part in harvest decisions, while their sons, Lukáš and Matúš, have brought their own international experience back home to Strekov. Lukáš contributes to the winery’s marketing, while Matúš is involved in production, drawing on experience gained at a winery in Pennsylvania and at New Zealand’s renowned Saint Clair Family Estate. The result is a genuinely family-made wine story: deeply rooted in the vineyards of southern Slovakia, shaped by generations of knowledge, but open to ideas and experience from around the world.
